PostSubject: You Don't Have to be Perfect [Zero/Jiseth]   Wed Jun 24, 2015 3:52 pm

[Quarters]

"...Oh for god sake!"

Jiseth had grabbed at empty air as she extended her arm out from the shower stall. She could see a furry face biting down into the towel she had been looking for through the open doorway into the bedroom. The canine had been getting stealthier. A fun game to him and an annoying inconvenience for the Romulan.

With a sigh she stepped out, still quite drenched. Her hair was more tame now that it was shorter. No longer tangled into half braids all the way down her back. She crossed her arms and watched Ghost on the bed. There was a second sigh from her as she remembered she was not exactly the beta in the family anymore, at least to him.

It was a rarity now that Jiseth and Zero would have the same day off, but today the stars had aligned just so. For the moment however, all the former could think about is whether or not she wanted to still use the towel that had been confiscated by their pet. Probably not.

Zero checked the readouts on the artificial chamber, making sure that the precious being developing inside it was as healthy and strong as it could be. The date at which the little girl could be removed from it was drawing rapidly closer. The young Augment had programmed a count down on the console. Just over two months now. The thought both gave her joy, but also seemed to cause a tight band of panic to tighten around her chest.

The three vials of blood she had just collected were carefully clicked into the system, draining in to the continually pumping circulation. Callion was receiving all the nutrients she needed on an ongoing basis, but Zero still preferred to keep the flow of antibodies up to par with her own.

Hearing a commotion in the bedroom, she set aside the hypospray, crossing the lounge to see what was happening. It didn't take long for her to join the dots between the canine with a towel and the drenched, naked Romulan.

A few short weeks, maybe even a few days ago, the sight of her fiancé naked would have had Zero turning and leaving the room, but she was slowly distancing herself from what Corinth had done and had her believe, thanks to Jiseth's patience. Instead, she stepped over to their closet, picking out another large, fluffy towel and handing it to her.

"He has once again gained the upper hand over you," she remarked, going to retrieve the now drool-soaked one from Ghost.

There was a sudden, somewhat shocked look in Jiseth's eyes. They drifted down to the towel now in her possession and slowly she covered herself with it. There was a terrific amount of awkward silence coming from the Romulan.

She looked away toward the bathroom and slowly side-stepped toward it, hoping to go as unnoticed as Ghost had. The water was still running after all. Gentle billows of steam coming from the half-open doorway. Finally, she stopped and took in a deep breath.

"Yeah, it seems he has... Thanks."

Her eyes darted around for a moment as she tried to think of her next line.

"...How's Callion?"

Seeing Jiseth's reaction, Zero found her own gaze awkwardly dropping to the deck plates. Perhaps it was due to the Romulan's state of undress while she wore her uniform as immaculately as if she were going on duty? More likely it was due to the stresses placed on their relationship in general but, as much as they tore at the young Augment, she didn't even know where to start in terms of fixing it.

Perhaps, with them both having a day off together, they would be able to make some progress in that field.

The question about Callion made her look up again at her fiancée, glad that there was at least one subject that they could talk about with relative ease.

"She is progressing well. I have supplied her with another dose of my blood and corrected a minor fault with the artificial uterus. We will be able to welcome her at the earliest in six weeks, I believe."

Six weeks...

Their time was running out. Though in all fairness, they had much more time than other couples. Due to the stasis their daughter was in it had been well over a year since the initial conception. One that seemed to violate much of the ethical practices of Starfleet Medical, but considering all the things they had done themselves. Jiseth had grown very inconsiderate of regulations outside of the ones she held dear, which in their own right were rare.

The towel was warm at least. That's all she could really focus on. Similar to the warmth of another body, Zero's in particular, who always seemed to run a body temperature higher than normal. There was something particularly romantic, or at least formerly so, about that. After hours of activity and bed sheets flung about, there was just the Augment's embrace and that was all she needed.

Jiseth looked to Zero, still rather tense. There were things she felt she had to apologize for, but had no real idea how. The months had gone on and there seemed to be a routine forming that neither liked nor had any inclination on how to reverse. The incident with the Monongahela and Nemesis was no longer the first thing on the Romulan's mind. Ever since Pullock V, it had been the crash. The waking up in the middle of the night screaming only to find herself alone with a startled pup while Zero worked in Sickbay. It was long overdue for something to break the cycle.

"That's not a lot of time to prepare... Would you-I mean... In order to keep my wings T'Koris ordered I do counselling sessions on the holodeck. The tasks get more challenging, but I keep failing this one. It's so stupid. Kobayashi Maru seemed easier... I need help. I would prefer if it were from you."

"There will be adequate time to prepare," Zero replied, hoping to reassure the Romulan. She chewed on her lip, a new habit that she had taken up only recently, making a mental note to put all but her most critical projects on hold for the time being so that she could concentrate on the struggling relationship between them. Callion needed and deserved both of her mothers to function together as a loving household.

Before she could voice that thought, Jiseth had gone on to ask her assistance with a counselling project. The young Augment was aware of the condition. She ensured that she kept up with Jiseth's health needs, at least in terms of knowing what they were so that she could keep an eye on their development and healing. The Pullock V mission had not been a simple one, but she had been protected from it since her skills had been needed back on the ship in order to care for the casualties.

"Of course I will assist you," she said softly, taking a step toward Jiseth even though she wasn't sure where to go from there. "I would be honoured to."

The Romulan closed her eyes after Zero took a step closer. If it appeared she was mentally preparing herself, that is because she most certainly was. How much affection was too much? Up until now, it had been any. There were nights she thought about taking up the offer to be intimate with another, but the only one who she showed the slightest interest in had been recently sent back to Bajor and buried.

C'est la vie.

When Jiseth's gaze returned, she kept it on Zero. Moving closer, she tightened the towel around her and sat on the nearest corner of the bed. If the Augment was going to help, she would at least have to know what she was getting into.

"The specifics change from each time, but certain things remain the same. Get shot down. Bail out. Evade capture. Get rescued. Do all of this in the span of a few hours, otherwise you get left behind and the test ends in failure."

She lowered her head slightly, but her eyes saw little aside from the floor.

"I've tried four times so far. The safeties are on, but to a point. My shoulder has been bothering me and my back too. Ejecting hurts..."

Then came a soft sigh.

"...But failing is worse. Maybe I should have gone into botany."

Hearing that Jiseth's injuries had been bothering her, Zero's expression closed off and she turned to stride into the bathroom, grabbing her medical kit. Pulling out the tricorder, she sat behind her Romulan and scanned her before setting the device aside and, after a moment's hesitation, laid her hands on Jiseth's skin. It felt... good. Soft, and warmer than her own.

"Your musculature has been healed after each ejection, but that has not resulted in relaxed muscle tissue." She gently started to rub at a large knot, easing it out. "I will be able to ease the pain, if that is agreeable to you. It will mean postponing returning to your simulation for an hour or so."

There was a moment of discomfort while being under the tricorder. There was sometimes an invasive feeling to Zero's care that never seemed to find the things Jiseth kept hidden. Not that a tricorder could assist in empathy. Neuron frequencies and hormone levels. That's all it saw. In that moment, she wondered if that was all Zero saw.

Her touch however, was quiet welcome, albeit surprising. Comforting. Every so often Jiseth would wince at the pressure on a knot. There were a few seconds during then that she wished the thoroughness of the Augment could be a bit more gentle, but it would be over soon.

Or perhaps longer. An entire hour of it. Jiseth looked over to Ghost and relinquished a soft smile. There was a cuteness that made his actions quite redeemable. Also the realization that the Romulan would hardly be the disciplinarian between the two mothers. Romulans traditionally had strict households, but there was an openness within the confines of the starship that could not be replicated on her homeworld.

"Most agreeable... I'm not exactly eager to get bruised up again so soon."

She paused for a moment, still somewhat surprised that even any physical contact was involved.

"...How are you feeling?"

When Jiseth winced, so did the Augment working on her knots. Each time, Zero tried to be more gentle with the area in particular, not wanting to hurt Jiseth.

"I would hope that you are not eager to injure yourself," she replied, her voice slightly troubled at the thought. As the Romulan asked how she was holding up, she paused in her actions. After a moment's hesitation, she gently, tentatively kissed the back of Jiseth's neck. "I am enjoying being able to care for you."

She got up briefly to rummage around in their closet, pulling out a bottle of faintly scented oil before returning to Jiseth. "It will be more comfortable for you to lie down, would it not?"

Looking over her shoulder, Jiseth nodded.

"I suppose it would."

There was a lingering look toward Zero before she crawled up the bed. While on all fours she loosened the towel and pulled it away from her front before laying down on her chest. Reaching back, she folded the top of the towel over itself to expose her upper back. Everything between her knees and lumbar vertibrae was still concealed.

It reminded her of a more tranquil version of their first night together. The massage she gave Zero was like working on stone. Her hands were sore for hours after. That did little to stop the other things that occurred that night, but quietly she hoped those would not happen today as unusual as it might seem.

She just wanted the savor the moment as is. Nothing more.

Zero looked down at the coverlet as Jiseth gave her a lingering look, feeling blood rushing to her cheeks. It had taken a long time for the couple to build back up to this point, where Zero could actually lay a hand on Jiseth's bare skin. She wished, from time to time, that she could explain to her somehow that it wasn't the Romulan's fault, that there was nothing she could do to speed things along. Corinth had firmly established in the young Augment's mind that anything that brought her pleasure was to be shut down and avoided at all costs, lest she bring on any of the various punishments he had devised for her.

Pouring a little of the oil onto her hands and warming it, she sat on the bed next to Jiseth, going back to work on the Romulan's tense muscles and knots.

"Which... Which part of the simulation troubles you? In what way may I assist?"

A soft sigh of relief left Jiseth's lips as the Augment's hands went about. Warm and slick, but not too much so. There was the mending of a dermal regenerator, however, this was healing. She took in the sensations openly with her eyes closed. Simply savoring what had not been felt in months.

"There's a maze of sorts... Enemy patrols throughout... Can't be seen... Problem is... Some of them are visible... Some aren't... Other puzzles too... Can't be in multiple places at once... When they see you, you're marked... You think you can outrun it... Escape some how... Then minutes may pass... an hour once... Out of nowhere it feels like you've been struck by lightning... I can never think fast enough... Too much at once..."

Zero continued to work and listened in silence as Jiseth told her about the simulation. It didn't seem to be all that complex, but she suspected that there was more to it than that if Jiseth hadn't been able to solve it thus far.

Once she had also fallen silent, Zero hesitated a moment before asking: "These simulations... they are designed to test various aspects of your professional competency. You specified that you cannot be in multiple places, nor are you able to process the influx of information. Could it be that the ultimate objective of this simulation is to force you to ask for assistance?"

"The thought had crossed my mind... I kept looking for a way around it... Maybe something I missed in the process... A narrow escape, perhaps? ...Not the case... It always changes... I have the banged up body to prove it..."

There was a minute or so of quiet from the Romulan before she was able to adequately find the words. Only one thing really came to mind. Sometimes she wished she were an empath to never need words, just sense the feelings. It seemed so much easier that way.

"Thank you... for doing this..."

Although the young Augment wanted sincerely to comment on the fact that Jiseth had a banged up body, she decided that it was probably wiser to keep it to herself. This was ice that they were treading on in their relationship, and she wasn't entirely sure how thin it was.

"It is not an onerous task," she replied. "I... I find enjoyment in caring for you. I am aware that I am far from the ideal mate for you, especially in the most recent months, but that does not mean that my emotional attachment to you is any less strong than it was before."

"I wouldn't exactly say I'm the best either... I never quite figured out... what Henriks saw in me... I had already given my heart to you... Such a necrotic thing... Sometimes I wonder about what Gavin said... Cursed little bugger got inside my head... He still thinks I'm insane... but he saw something... I need to be able to tell you..."

Slowly Jiseth's hands which rested above her head balled into fists, clenching into the bed sheets. Her breathing changed. Deeper, slightly faster. She was afraid.

As Jiseth spoke, Zero could feel the muscles under her hands tense and contract, a natural reaction to the Romulan's apparently stressed state. She paused in her massage, tentatively reaching further up Jiseth's body to stroke her hair.

"Your heart is a gift that I treasure," the young Augment assured her. "What ever it is that you wish to tell me, I will listen when you are ready."

...When you are ready.

The words stuck in Jiseth's mind as if they had been chiseled into stone tablet. Her eyes closed as she concentrated on taking slow, deep breaths. Soon her grip on the bed sheets eased and she relaxed once more.

"...Perhaps not just yet... One step at a time I suppose... I know we've usually made leaps and then backtracked over what we missed... I need to somehow slow down... Enjoy the time we have... I foresee a great deal of projectile vomit and fecal matter flying around like anti-aircraft fire..."

Watching as Jiseth started to relax again, Zero got back to work getting all of the knots out of the muscles beneath her hands.

"I will wait," she replied in what she hoped was a reassuring tone. She paused for a moment to apply more oil. "We do not have much time before Callion will be ready to join us."

"...No we don't."

Jiseth pushed herself up turned her head to the other side before laying down on her chest again. She enjoyed the aroma of the oil. Its warmth was lingering and pleasant as well. The knot in stomach would have to wait. No amount of massaging would make that go away.

"I've been wondering... If the implant in your heart can't be removed... Perhaps we can destroy the transmitter... Keep the kill signal from ever being able to be sent... Remove the bullet from Corinth's gun as it were..."

Zero continued her work in silence for a moment as she pondered Jiseth's suggestion. The only problem that she could see with it though was that she simply didn't have enough information to give a definitive answer.

"I... I do not know," she admitted quietly, a statement that she absolutely hated having to give. With her intellect, she didn't think that she should ever have to say such a thing. "It was never explained to me in detail, and the simple concept of such a device within me, of what it was capable of doing, was enough to instill a sense of fear."

"Something that's always bothered me... has been the potential for it to detect a transmission... close enough to the kill signal..."

Looking over her shoulder and tilting her head as far as she could around, there was an expression of deep remorse on her face. It was probably something that Zero had considered herself. T'Koris as well. Anyone who had any clue as to the nature of the Augment's situation. She closed her eyes and plopped her head back down on the pillow.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought that up, but... That was an earlier challenge... Diffuse the thing... I was so scared. The test felt real in the moment. Then I left you before it went off... Still trying to wrap my head around why that was not a failing result..."

"I try not to think of it," Zero admitted, continuing to rub at Jiseth's shoulders and back as she chased the last knots to smooth them out in the hope of making her lover feel better. Then, hesitantly, she leaned down to place a gentle kiss on the pointed tip of the Romulan's ear.

"Perhaps simply the fact that you were willing to make such a sacrifice was the challenge," she replied thoughtfully. "If such an event would come to pass, I would not wish you to be there to witness it. It would distress you so."

"...Why am I the weak one?"

Reaching around and over her shoulder she took Zero's hand in her own. Pulling gently she brought it to her lips and kissed the back. The softness of her skin made the sheets feel like wool in comparison.

Her question was mostly rhetorical. Surely her partner could not answer what she herself had been failing to. The solution seemed so simple in writing: get over yourself. Not so when other's lives hung in the balance based on her decisions.

"Tell me again why you don't think I'm inferior..."
