Solan ran his fingers through his hair, resting his forehead on his palm.  "They never even made any demands," the old man said, shaking his head.  He paused a moment, appearing to reconsider.  "Well...none that we could interpret.  They filled our comm channel with nothing but screeching...it sounded like stones scraping glass.  If that was communication, then obviously they didn't like what we had to say back."

He looked over to Markio, knowing that the other man had lost his wife on one of the other ships.  Solan took a sip of his water, then continued.  "We didn't even have a chance.  Their shots tore through the defense screens, taking out the first ship.  The second didn't last much longer.  By that point, we were doubling back at maximum speed.  That's when...that's when they just started following.  Stalking.  Like a jungle cat.  Great gods...it went on for days...days!  They toyed with us!"  The glass fell from his numbed hand, thudding dully against the carpeted floor.

Rachel listened to the Director's story, mentally comparing it to the previous Tholian encounters that they had on file. It certainly seemed to fit, but it would seem that the Director didn't have access to a universal translator or, at least, not one as sophisticated as the one the Federation took for granted.

"That does sound like the Tholians," she agreed. "However, our technology does allow us to translate the Tholian language. Do you have recordings of their transmissions?"

Kristen brushed the hair from her face as Mira stepped off the turbo lift. There was something about that hologram that made her feel like a school-girl. She regressed by about 10 years every time she came around. She looked to her console when Mira shot her a smile. Kristen looked back up and returned the smile to her friend and then re-directed her attention to the scene taking place in the operations center.

[Operations Centre]

Seeing that there were no tensions between the Director and the admiral, nor any apparent hostile intentions, Mira allowed herself to step back a little and let them have some space.  As it was, the alien looked nervous enough.  He didn't need a security officer breathing down his neck.

Her 'step back' took her subconsciously closer to the operations console, where her only friend was on duty.  She turned slightly, flashing Kristen a smile.  It was strange, but she enjoyed the input the young officer had on her subroutines.

Director Solan

Henriks Ābols wrote:

"How is the rest of your crew faring?" Henriks asked.

The old man's eye widened for a second as the doctor pressed some kind of medical device to him, but a wave of relief flooded through him momentarily. The good feeling didn't last long, however, as his sad, gold-tinged eyes considered the man. "They're dead," Solan said after a long pause. "Our vessels were just exploratory, meant to be run with a skeleton crew." He winced at his own word choice.

Rachel Deacon wrote:

Markio stood from where he sat, nodding. "Our ship has data cards. They should have made recordings of outgoing and incoming transmissions." His voice was hollow, as were his eyes.

Rachel felt a measure of sympathy for the Director as he told the gathered officers that his crew was dead. He would most certainly require significant help from the medical and counselling departments, which he would get while he was on the station. However, she considered that one of the best things that she could do for him now was to help sort out this situation with the Tholians.

Turning her attention away from him, she addressed three of her bridge staff. "Young, Grell, take Mira and go find those data cards. Find out what information you can get from the and run the transmissions through the universal translator. Knowing what the Tholians said will be helpful to dealing with the ship hanging off the station."

[Ops]

A brief wave of relief passed over the old man's face, and it almost looked as if he were about to relax, as the hypo's medicines began to take effect. But almost immediately his 'fight or flight' response kicked back in. Henriks wondered how much longer it was going to be before the man's adrenaline overwhelmed the stabilizers and restoratives that Henriks had put into his system. But he had done what he could and would continue monitoring him until it was possible to get the Director back to sickbay.

"I'm sorry," Henriks managed, completely at a loss for words. He knew, they all knew, the Director's pain. Memories of the Dominion war were still strong for some, and Henriks had found his own surfacing more than he would have liked lately.

Such pain and destruction... Henriks hated war, and all it brought. That someone would willing harm another, whatever the cause, filled him with such rage. He had to look away for a moment, lest he be overwhelmed by memories. If it weren't for Chira, Henriks didn't know how he would get through it all. His wife's soothing words had saved him from many dark days. If only she were up here now... but perhaps Henriks could find someone else later to help the Director with this devastating loss.

Kristen flashed another smile to Mira as she heard the Admiral's orders. The truth was that Kristen had only been paying partial attention to the activities around her since Mira had walked into the room. She quickly pulled herself together in time to respond to her Commanding Officer. "Aye sir. If the answers are there we'll find them." She stood from her station and made her way towards the turbo lift. She looked back to see if Mira was following behind her.

Seeing the young operations officer heading for the turbolift, Mira quite happily followed her, much like a puppy. Something in her programming was quite pleased that she had been assigned to look after Kristen as they went aboard the alien ship in search of records. While the hologram had no idea whether they would find something, the experience was sure to be an interesting one.

Kristen grabbed her tool kit on the way to the lift. She looked up to Mira. "No telling what we'll need when we get the. We'll have to run everything through the linguistic database." She attempted to change the subject hoping the hologram hadn't noticed the nervous laughter or unusually long stares. In most cases Kristen was one of the most calm and collected people that you could hope to know. She wasn't certain what to make of all of this.

"Aye, ma'am!" Myree replied, practically bounding out of her seat. Even though the situation was serious, and her heart bled for the poor old man and his friend...it was still exciting to actually be doing something. Don't forget the Tholians floating around out there, creeping on the station...

She smiled quickly at Kristen and Mira, and then suddenly stopped in her tracks. "Admiral...can we get a hand from Engineering to meet us down there?" Myree also wondered if they couldn't help fix these people's ship up, but she didn't want to say that out loud in front of everyone.

Rachel looked up toward the sound of a voice addressing her, noting the strange physiological readings of an Orion.

"Of course, Ensign. I believe they have a new member of the Engineering team who may be helpful. A Sigma Nu. Put in a call and have them meet you at the craft."

Nodding, Myree quickly bounded to catch up to the other two. "Hold the lift," she called out, grinning broadly, her white teeth flashing against her viridian skin. She stood in place as the 'lift quickly took them to the docking area.

[Engineering]

=/\=I'll be there in a jiffy,=/\= Sigma replied immediately. That was less than true, a Jiffy being a tiny fraction of a second, but they would certainly be making a speedy route. Re-calibrating the dylithium matrix was less than interesting when there were rumors of other things afoot on the station.

Though they were a loss for just what 'engineering things' meant, they did loop their metal-laced fingers around the handle of an advanced engineering kitbag. Whatever else they needed could probably be replicated.

Sigma left engineering, and didn't stop until they were at the large doors to access docking bay one.

Commander Erskine

[Mav'v Thol]

Three, two, one... Erskine thought, silently counting down the fifteen point two five minutes that he had given the Federation station to stew in the silence of space. They often found that opponents, if given enough time to worry over their predicament, would rush to foolish decisions. Victory over such was something to be savored. Communication channel open. Their thought went into the crystalline lattice, and his control panel instantly blinked. Erskine had a good crew. Disciplined. They had seen to it.

*Federation station...this is Commander Erskine of the Tholian Warrior Caste. You harbor fugitives from Tholian law. As our space is inviolable, so is our law. We demand right of prosecution of these fugitives. You will turn them over immediately.*

The trio of officers (well, two officers and a hologram) made their way into the docking area, with Myree checking her padd data for anything she could find on these Ujaan people. Unfortunately, nothing was coming up. It appeared that the Athena was in the midst of a first contact situation. Now if only these damned Tholians weren't here to crap in the punchbowl...

"Hi, Sigma," she said, waving the Deltan over to where they were gathered at the ship. "Thanks for getting here so quick...and look at all those Engineering things." She grinned puckishly at Nu, then turned her attention to the ship. "This thing is an antique. I think I heard that guy say they used data cards in it." Myree glanced at Mira. "Uh. I guess you want to like...scan this thing before we open it?"

Mira had followed along behind the other two officers quietly, although she had felt Kristen's gaze on her once or twice. That had been a bit of a strange sensation, her various subroutines gathering information about her environment and then informing her that there was someone watching her. Having heard some of her security colleagues talking about an 'itch between the shoulderblades' as a way to know when one was being watched, the hologram wondered absently if it would be possible to program herself with something similar.

When they arrived at the docking bay in question, Mira nodded to the science officer, stepping up to the control panel next to the airlock, pulling out her tricorder.

"I'll go in first. If there's anything lethal in there, I'll pick it up, but I won't be hurt by it."

Ah, we hear their voices at last, Rachel thought to herself, turning back in the direction of the viewscreen. Tholians were't a species she had ever really had to deal with, thankfully. They tended to keep to themselves as long as you stayed out of their territory. It was just unfortunate that the Director's ship had violated that rule.

The Admiral was also finding herself at a bit of a dilemma. On the one hand, she was about to interfere with something that had nothing to do with the Federation, but on the other hand, this was a first contact situation with the Ujaans. If only he had asked for asylum...

"Commander Erskine, this is Admiral Deacon of Starbase Athena. Could you tell me exactly what laws have been violated by the fugitive?"

As the sound of the Tholian's voice filled the commlinks of the starbase Ops station, Markio flinched involuntarily. Once, twice...and then a shuddering overtook his body. "Gods of light and air," he muttered, his face flushed. "That voice...that voice!" Although the younger man already had a sallow face, his features turned ever more sickly. "They killed her! They killed them all, and they're going to kill you, too!" His yellowish eyes darted around the room, taking in everyone as he pulled at his hair. That harsh, screeching voice...it would haunt his nightmares as long as he lived.

Suddenly, the Ujaan jumped up from where he sat, shoving past the doctor, intent on charging toward Solan. "You crazy old bastard! This is your fault! You tried to make us walk the paths of the gods!"

Raising a hand, Myree opened her mouth to protest Mira's logic. After all, it seemed almost too easy to just let her rush into danger because she was a hologram. True, she couldn't be hurt by conventional means, but...Myree knew that, as holograms became more common, sentient life would have to see them as strictly equal to flesh-and-blood. To do otherwise would be to risk marginalization, and that would make them little more than slaves.

However...Mira was a security officer...and it kinda was a sec/tac's job to rush into danger. The Orion nodded, allowing Mira to go into the ship. She glanced over at Kristen, shrugging slightly.

Kristen stood outside the airlock behind Myree. "Alright Mira." Kristen said with a bit of hesitation. On one hand she knew that Mira was right. If anything adverse happened she would be less likely to get injured. However, that didn't stop Kristen from being concerned for her friend. "Just remember, you're not invincible. If anything happens to your emitters its possible that I won't be able to reinitiate you're program."

Erskine sat back in the command station, reveling in counting down the minutes in their head.  Prepare the leader vessels, the crystalline creature thought.  Humans were a lying, obstinate bunch...almost as bad as Vulcans.  It had been many of their 'years' since their people had tested the mettle of the Federation.  Erskine's subordinates scrambled to perform his order, their multi-jointed legs clacking along the Thol's internal structure.

Ready to deploy at your will, Commander, they thought, causing Erskine's eyes to glow in pleasure as he watched the seconds fall away.

Rachel raised one eyebrow at the return communication.  It was certainly inkeeping with the previous reports on interactions with the Tholians, but it didn't really help their situation any.

"Commander, we're currently investigating claims by the fugitive ship's captain, but it seems that the violation of your space was not done consciously nor deliberately.  Their communications technology is not as advanced as yours or mine and was incapable of analysing the structure of your language.  If you would be kind enough to allow us more time to validate the claims of either side, we can perhaps find a better solution all round.  You're welcome to come aboard the station and be a part of that investigation, if you so wish."

Offering her friend a smile, Mira nodded to her. "I know, but I am more invincible than you or Myree," she pointed out before keying in the reliease on the airlock and stepping inside.

The ship was in significant disarray, most probably from whatever firefight it had endured. Consoles sparked and burned, the air heavy with smoke. On the bridge, bodies also lay scattered, some still slumped over the consoles they had manned, the smell of burnt flesh still hanging obtrusively in the air. Mira was unaffected by any of these sights, since it wasn't in her programming to be afraid or put off by anything like this. She took a couple of readings from her tricorder and, while the temperature was perhaps higher than may be comfortable for the majority of humanoids, it was still within tolerance levels. Oxygen levels were also a hair lower than standard, but that was hardly surprising given the smoke.

Tapping her commbadge, she sent a message out to the two officers still waiting by the airlock: "Mira to Ensigns Young and Grell, tricorder readings indicate that it is safe to come in. I'm currently on the bridge."

"Well," Myree said, her face somewhat apprehensive, "here we go, I guess."  She ducked through the nearly-ruined airlock, flinching at how dark and scorched everything was.  "I can't believe they even made it this far," she said, shaking her head.  Although her coppery hair was tied up in a bun, it still felt like bits of char were getting stuck in it.

The Orion girl's heart sank even more as she saw one of the bodies.  Although the ship was small, it had held a handful of crew.  They probably all knew each other, she thought, feeling a wave of sadness wash over her.  They might even have been family or something.  "Okay..." she said, pointedly ignoring the ruination around her.  She was an officer, after all, and had a job to do.  "If I was a data card...where would I be hiding..."  With a little bit of convincing, a panel came off the main console, revealing a small nest of microfilaments suspended in polymer casing, like a little motherboard.  "Sig...can we get these plugged into our computer reader?"

Commander Erskine

[Mab'v Thol]

*Your attempt at dissembling will not succeed, Rachel Deacon of the United Federation of Planets.  You know your atmosphere is like unto death to us.  Not only do you scoff at our law, you threaten us.  If you offer harbor to this fugitive, you are on the wrong end of Tholian law.  Forty-seven Earth seconds have elapsed, one minute thirteen remain.  Your decision?*

All around Erskine, the scuttle of activity was a pleasing one.  They will not comply, came one of their subordinates.  The Tholian commander nodded, more of an impression rather than a physical action.  Erskine's eye-glow shifted again, more subtly this time, for it was the Tholian equivalent of a full grin.  Deploy on my mark.

Kristen followed Grell's lead and ducked through the damaged airlock. The devastation around her didn't phase the young woman. Kristen grew up on a starship and had, unfortunately, seen this level of carnage before. As they entered the vessel she flipped open her tri-corder and began to scan the surrounding area. She detected nothing unexpected. It wasn't that she didn't trust her colleague, Mira, but one could never be too careful when walking into unfamiliar surroundings. "Everything looks okay." She said glancing at Myree and Sigma.

After Myree removed the panel Kristen became fascinated with what she saw. The alien technology, though damaged, proved to be very different from what she was accustomed too. Before Sigma could answer she popped in with a reaction. "I've never seen anything else like it." She crouched and leaned in closer to the exposed panel and looked toward Sigma Nu. "What do you think, Ensign?"
