[Observation Lounge]

Julia sat stoic in the observation lounge aboard the Phoenix. She had just been informed of the plight on Daedilon 3. A human colony was experiencing what seemed to be quite the epidemic. She was ordered to take a security officer and Dr. Zero Alpha to the world and render assistance. She was going to call her group to the lounge and brief them on the mission to come.

Zero was not happy to be disturbed by the call from Lieutenant Rellek. Rubbing her arm from the sting of having taken blood to transfuse into the artificial womb where her daughter was still developing, she made her way to the observation lounge.

Stepping inside, she scanned the room briefly before seeing the other blue-shirt. Standing to attention, her arms folded behind her back, she said:

"Zero Alpha reporting as ordered."

Being neck-deep in status reports and phaser inspections wasn't anyone's idea of a good time-- unless you were a Romulan by the name of Safefta Pardek. Thus, she was chagrined to be removed from this work indulgence by a call from a superior officer. Safefta neatly stacked the PADDs on her desk, and left them be.

She was halfway down the hall before she realized that she had no idea what she'd been called for. Ah, well. That will be known shortly.

The Romulan entered the room to see that Zero Alpha was already there. She'd never gotten on well with the pale woman... but now she simply avoided speaking with her. The stoic woman had far more important matters to think about than quarreling with an overgrown- albiet brilliant- child.

"Ensign Pardek, reporting as ordered," the expressionless hybrid stated.

[Observation Lounge]

Julia stood at the end of the table as her colleagues entered the room. She gave a slight nod acknowledging the entrance of each officer.

"Thank you, thank you for being so prompt ladies." She perused through the stack of PADD's in front of her. She handed a PADD outlining the mission to each officer and then passed a second PADD to Dr. Alpha. "I will keep this briefing direct and to the point. Captain T'Koris has ordered me to take the USS Monongahela to Daedilon 3. There is a small human colony of approximately 500 living on the surface of the second moon. The moon is M class. All of the survey teams named it an appropriate place for the colonists to settle. However, they are approximately 1 year into the settlement of their new home and have been stricken by a mysterious condition that seems to have a profound effect on the human genome. Casualties on the colony are currently at 10% and rising steadily. As far as the colony's doctors can tell the present rate of infection is at 28% and climbing." She stopped and turned to Dr. Alpha. "Doctor, as you can see the disease attacks the nucleotide structures that hold the base pairs of certain chromosomes together. Over time they breakdown and the condition proves fatal with a 100% mortality rate. Given your expertise you can see why you were chosen for this assignment." She then turned to Ensign Pardek. "And Ensign, I believe your presence here is quite obvious. We must escort Dr. Alpha to the colony so she can begin studying the illness and hopefully discover a remedy."

She paused and took a long slow sip of her coffee and looked back at the two officers in front of her. "I cannot overstate the importance of this mission. Hundreds of lives are at stake. Their Doctor's can isolate it but have no idea how to even begin to treat it."

"Do either of you have any questions?"

Zero had glanced over her shoulder as she heard someone else come in, but seeing the tall, quiet Romulan, she then turned her attention back to the science officer who had called them.

Her ears perked up at the mention of a genetic disease, her mind already thinking of the various possibilities. A non-congenital communicable genetic disorder. It was like Christmas for the young Augment.

"When do we depart?"

Trapped in a shuttle for a disaster relief mission with these two? How... unfortunate. The Romulan did not voice her misgivings, having known better than to complain actively about any orders she was given. She'd deal with Zero's petulant behavior and Rellek's incessant cheeriness.

This disease sounded unpleasant, to say the least.

Alpha voiced the only question she had. Safefta was not well known for speaking too much, especially on matters of business. She kept silent, and waited for an answer.

A smile flashed on Julia's face. She knew, deep down, that she was probably far too cheery for this small group. Fortunately for her, they had an expertise that the mission required. "We will be leaving in 3 hours." Julia shuffled through the pile of PADD's before her and reached for one at the bottom and passed it to Zero. "Here is all of the research the Doctor's on the colony have done. Review it and have the ships medical technicians pack whatever supplies you think you may need and have it moved to the runabout." She looked through her notes one last time. "That's everything for now. See you in three hours in the shuttlebay. Unless there are any additional questions you are dismissed until then."

Taking the PADD from the science officer, Zero powered it on to make sure that it did indeed contain the information she needed to make a start on looking for a cure. Once she was sure that the information was correct, she nodded to the science officer.

"Acknowledged. We will meet in three hours," she stated before turning on her heel and leaving the room. She would have to inform Jiseth that she had been assigned to a mission and gather all the equipment from the labs she might need.

USS Monongahela

Julia sat aboard the vessel and began the preflight sequences. She was anxious to get underway and had arrived early for the mission departure. The medical team buzzed through the vessel loading the supplies that Zero had requested.

"Dear god... will there be anything left in Sickbay?" She said jokingly to one of the technicians as he made his seventh or with trip... She had lost count. One thing was for certain, Dr. Alpha was certainly through.

[Shuttlebay]

Zero had arrived early to the meeting point in the shuttlebay in order to supervise the loading of all the equipment she had requested from the medical labs. There had been a very long list. She wanted to be as prepared as possible for whatever was waiting for her out on the planet.

She shot a glare at the Lieutenant as the human commented on the equipment being loaded. "I have only taken items from the genetics laboratory. As I will not be present, I doubt that it will be in use in the meantime."

[Shuttlebay]

The joking to the tone of her voice seemed to escape the doctor. Julia made sure to note that she seemed to take everything at face value. She knew hardly anything about their resident geneticist. Dr. Alpha seemed to keep to herself.

"I'm glad you're prepared Doctor. Who knows what we'll find when we get there. Have you reviewed the data? Do you have any theories about what my be causing the degradation of the nucleotide sequences in these people?"

Zero checked over the last few pieces of equipment that had been loaded into the shuttle, making sure that they were, indeed, what she had asked for and that she had everything on the incredibly long and detailed list. She looked up at Julia as she spoke, raising one eyebrow.

"A genetic illness is, as a general rule, non transmissible by any means other than hereditary. However, it could be a prion disease carried by a parasite, perhaps, or possibly a form of technology such as a nanite. Other possibilities could encompass their environmental conditions which could damage their genetic codes, but it appears to be far too virulent for such a thing."

Julia flashed a smile. She was impressed with the Doctor's preparedness. "Good work Doctor. I'm going to go ahead and begin pre-ignition sequence so we can launch when Ensign Pardek arrives. Go ahead and secure the last of you supplies." She swirled her chair around and began working through the pre-flight checklist that Starfleet had mandated.

Safefta had been quietly overseeing the small amount of security equipment that she was authorized to bring on a mission. It wasn't much, and to her rather exacting mind, she was underwhelmed. A sidearm consisting of a type-two phaser, a small, pocket size type-one for a primary weapon, and one single phaser rifle for emergencies.

It was highly unlikely that it would be used, but it would be brought onto the shuttle per standard procedure.

The latter was hung on the Romulan hybrid's back as she approached the group. It would shortly be placed in a case once aboard the shuttle. Safefta nodded stiffly to her two traveling companions as she entered the body of the craft.

"All equipment is aboard," the security officer blankly stated.

Julia looked to Ensign Pardek as she boarded the vessel. "Very well Ensign, take your station. We've already been through the pre-flight checklist and are ready to depart." Julia tapped the command to close the hatch door.

=/\= Lieutenant Rellek to the bridge, requesting permission to depart.=/\=

The voice of Captain T'Koris filled the cabin. " Acknowledged lieutenant. Good luck. And with those words from the captain she navigated the vessel out of the shuttlebay.

"Shuttlebay cleared. Setting course and engaging at warp 6." The stars turned to streaks flying by the windows of the vessel. "Our ETA is approximately 4 hours."

Now that the Vulcanoid security ensign had arrived and all of the equipment she had requested from the medical labs had been loaded on to the shuttle, Zero took a seat and strapped herself in. Since there was nothing she could do to help in the piloting of the craft and certain that she didn't want to strike up a conversation with either of the two intellectual gnats that she was sharing the space with, the young Augment pulled out a PADD that she had been compiling notes on and continued to read.

Four hours was quite a long time to most people.

Safefta knew she could pass it easily with a PADD filled with data from previous reports. Work was always the better thing to do when there was only silence (or elements forbid, conversation) as an alternative. A brief glance told her that Zero Alpha was doing the same.

Good. The two white-haired women had never gotten along. Alpha delighted in reminding Pardek of her inferior status, both in blood and intellectual capability. Now, Safefta knew she was actually rather intelligent, but the notion of infeiority by blood wasn't exactly a subject that played nice with her.

She calls me pointy, she though irritably to herself. She didn't know the other woman in the shuttle except in passing.

This is not to be a pleasant expedition.
