For a moment, Ilana's heart was in her mouth.  Nelkar's expression was stern, unyielding as he looked at her, possibly as if she was an insect who dared to scuttle across his polished boot, but a flood of relief rushed through her when he nodded, a bright smile lighting up her face.

"G-g-good!" she replied, gesturing down the corridor for him to come with her.  "R-R-Raynor'll p-p-probably b-be w-w-wondering wh-where I am b-b-by n-n-now, b-b-but h-he'll kn-kn-know wh-where all th-th-the g-g-good alcohol is, if th-th-that's wh-what y-y-you w-w-want."

For one brief, fleeting moment, Nelkar allowed himself to take the tiniest amount of joy in how quickly Ilana's expression turned around. He had so little of that feeling. It didn't last long. As soon as he left his quarters and shut them behind him, his expression re-set into its standard scowl.

He walked along with Ilana, and contemplated what he was getting into. "I know little of this custom," he said as they entered the docking ring, the first words he'd said the whole time.

"Perhaps you could explain it to me."

Nelkar laughed-- well, he managed a low rumble of an amused noise. Religion. Something like that usually didn't dig its claws into the military... But he supposed humans had much more of an appreciation for leave than cardassians did.

He wasn't complaining about the prospect of drinking more than he needed to, either. A least here ird be socially acceptable.

Immediately, she started to scan the gathered people, looking for the distinctive form of her par'mach'kai. A wide smile spread over her face as she spotted him almost exactly where she expected to see him. By the drinks table, probably looking for some decent Klingon alcohol.

"Th-th-there's R-R-Raynor," she said. "B-b-by th-the d-d-drinks!" Without waiting for a response from Nelkar, she practically bounded over to the Klingon.

[USS Phoenix, Deck C]

Arlan was new to the Phoenix, and while most of the crew were down on Starbase Athena for the holiday party, he was working and running tests throughout the pod.  He didn't consider himself a specialist, not really - but apparently service aboard the Honshu made him one.  That and the fact that he was accustomed to pieces of half-functioning equipment being barely supplied out in the frontier.  He was hanging upside down with a grav belt on, waving a tricorder over the second port-side tube assembly.  The whole pod had taken a beating from wherever they'd been before, and he dreaded the thought of what this Captain thought normal maintenance entailed.

He heard one of the other Tactical guys walking in, and glanced at him before going back to work.

That was when he heard the man's booming voice - it seemed that all torpedo rooms had a CO who could somehow work his voice to just about set the whole place echoing - so that when things got real, they'd all be ready.

"Hey, Opran!  Get your hands off the damn launcher - it'll wait 'til tomorrow.  You're new, fine, you don't have to impress me.  Besides, I'm sure this crew can outdo Fogerty's any day of the week."

Arlan looked down, his eyebrow lifted curiously, a half-smirk on his face.  "Oh, I'm sure of that, boss - since you poach his best crew."

The kind of ribbing he was used to on the Sophie had carried over across Starfleet; he was still in a cramped space with a bunch of roughnecks.  Sometimes when you were right near the edge of death, you needed to learn to have a sense of humor.  "But all kidding aside, what the hell happened?  Your umbilical links were just about sheared off, and it looks like your EPS taps fused!  What the hell kind of fight were you in?"

The older man shrugged, glancing around, suddenly self-conscious at the damage done to this ship recently.  "Some kinda freaky anomaly.  Ask the geniuses down on the Bridge. I just know we didn't lose anybody, and I thank my lucky stars for that.  Now, are you gonna knock it off, or am I gonna make it an order that you get your ass down there and have a good time!?"

The young Trill sighed, lowering himself and closing his tricorder.  "Fine, Lieutenant, whatever you say."  He took off the belt and put it away, looking at the man. "You comin'?"

With a nod and a shooing gesture from the torpedo room CO, Arlan found himself headed to the Starbase.

[Christmas Party]

Well, this is a drag, was all that Opran could think of.  Very little of the food was on his 'approved list', and the last time he'd had real alcohol, he'd ended up doubled over with cramps and a doctor telling him he'd been an idiot.  So he stood with a cup of hot Fanalian tea, one of few things from the Trill homeworld he could stomach.  He wondered if he'd see Leela here.  Or if she'd ever talk to him again after the argument they'd had in the Mess Hall.

Nelkar knew it was a joke and took it as such... Though in reality, it was honestly very likely that he'd find himself right where she said he would. He had no intention of leaving this room any degree of sober. Màybe some Kanar, if they did have it. The thick liquid might help chase some of the lingering tightness he felt in his chest he felt..well, whenever he thought of anything but his starfleet work. If he wanted to do that, however, he'd have to go get started.

Ilana's partner was there. Now, Nelkar was not an easily intimidated man, but klingons had quite the violent reputation. Perhaps if he just... Didn't make eye contact. With that thought in mind, he followed Ilana, eyes diverted to the table's spread with the intent of finding something worth consuming.

[Leela's Quarters USS Phoenix]

Leela rushed through her quarters attempting to put the finishing touches on her outfit for the party. Where did those damned shoes go?" She was throwing clothes form one end of her quarters to a pile in the corner when she stumbled on her black heels. She slipped them on and stopped for a quick look in the mirror before stepping out of her quarters.

Her dress was red, fitted, and came down to about 5 inches above her knee. It was sleeveless and a black scarf hung over her shoulders and wrapped around her elbow. She was attempting to get in the spirit for this, very human, holiday.

She moved towards the door of her quarters and as she stepped out the tapped her communicator. She was worried that Zero would attempt to skip the event.

=/\=Kaz to Zero. I just wanted to remind you that this event is not optional. Are you ready to go?"=/\=

Her expression light up at the sight of the ship's first officer making her way toward them.  While on duty they had to respect the decorum of the chain of command, Persephone did enjoy spending time with the coffee-loving woman off duty when they got the chance.

"Making up for lost time?" she teased, nodding to the cup of coffee in Julia's hand.  "I was just about to rrrreassure Burrris herrre that the Captain and Chief Engineerrrr werrrren't about to thrrrow him to the wolves overrrr his rrrepairrrs to the sensorrrs."

Julia's smile grew larger as Persephone seemed to return her own sentiment. She approached the pair and held her cup in the air, as if it were a glass of champagne at time of toast. "You can say that Seph! Let ensure the replicators never go down again." With a slight chuckle she had arrived at the window and stood with the pair of Ensigns. "Looks like we're early?"

As Persephone spoke about Ensign Kejal's concerns she shifted her body weight and attention in his direction. "Ensign no one is after you." She sighed. This wasn't a conversation that she cared to have. Her smile and calm demeanor remained as she continued her thought. "I think you're imagining things. I have served under T'Koris in a variety of roles. She wants nothing more than the success of those under her. But you have to respect her first... you've done your duty... but you've never made things easy for her or given her a chance to earn your respect."

[Zero's Quarters]

When the communication from Leela came though, Zero had been sat in the small nursery, Callion snoozing on her lap having just taken her bottle. The young Augment sighed heavily, having rather hoped that Leela would completely forget about dragging her to the party. It was just about the last thing she wanted to do. Unfortunately, the Trill seemed to think that this was an excellent opportunity to see how far she had progressed in her social interactions.

"Alpha to Kaz, I must finalise the arrangements for Callion, after which I will be prepared."

Getting to her feet with another heavy sigh, Zero lay her daughter back in her crib, careful not to wake the infant. As much as she wanted to take her daughter with her to the gathering, she didn't want to expose Callion's still-immature immune system to too many other people and species.

Before stepping out of the nursery, she activated the holositter program that the captain had given her a copy of, a little reassured that there would be someone constantly keeping watch over the infant and able to get a message to her should something be amiss. She then clicked her tongue, getting Ghost's attention and bringing him to heel. If she couldn't take Callion, then she would at least take the canine. He provided a useful buffer between her and other people as well as acting as support for her, especially in the time since her Romulan encounter.

With Ghost trotting to heel next to her, Zero reluctantly left her quarters, heading toward Leela's.

Leela stood outside her quarters and awaited the arrival of her friend Zero. She was surprised to see Zero running so far behind schedule, it was quite uncharacteristic of her.

She fiddled with the scarf as she saw a pale figure moving through the corridor. The first thing that caught her attention was that Zero was in standard uniform. "Couldn't dress up for this?" Leela chuckled as she started to move towards the hatch where the Phoenix had docked. As they walked she wanted to make sure Zero was prepared for such a large social engagement. "How are you feeling Zero? Are you ready for this?"

[Christmas Party]

All of the goodness and cheer made the Ferengi nauseated. All this giving, he was flabbergasted. Giving... what's the point. He thought. Leave it to the Hew-mons to create such a heartfelt holiday. But as he was thinking this, he decided that a little goodwill could be good for business. Rama had a public relations problem on the station. Incidents with the admiralty and security were draining what little respect he had gained from his companions on the station. So he made a sound business decision to cater this event for free, without the permission of the stations commanding officer.

Rama moved into the room carrying a plate. He was followed by a seemingly endless string of Fernegi waiters and at the end of the line entered two of his most beautiful Dabbo Girls. Rama pointed to a small table of replicated food. "Get that poor excuse for food." One of the girls picked up the plates and put them back in the replicator as the waiters set out the fresh food they had brought as well as a wide array of decorations Rama had brought following extensive research he had conducted on this insane holiday.

He looked around the room. "Has anyone seen that Admiral lady?"

Zero didn't bother to respond to Leela's dig about her uniform with anything more than a flat glare. She didn't 'dress up' unless specifically ordered to by a superior officer. In any case, she didn't own anything to dress up with beyond her dress uniform, and she hadn't noticed any specific mention of that being necessary on the invitation. Instead, she fell into step alongside the Trill as they headed for the starbase, Ghost happily following them with a lazy wag to his tail.

The question about her being ready for this social event would have made her laugh had she been disposed to such a display of emotion.

"To declare myself ready for such an event would be to declare a falsehood," she replied stiffly.

[Gathering]

Admiral Deacon was uneasy.

Large gatherings in general were difficult for her, trying to determine different individuals in the overwhelming onslaught of data being provided to her by her VISOR, but this time, she had two additional reasons to be uneasy: 1, the good cheer of the last Christmas gathering they had hosted had been brought to a rather abrupt halt by a visit from Q and, 2, the last gathering she had attended had resulted in a blade being slipped between her ribs and narrowly missing her heart.

The second one wouldn't normally have bothered her if not for the fact that the blade had managed to pierce the body armour she always wore under her uniform. The perpetrator of the act had never been caught either, not his weapon identified. Quite the food for thought.

However, her slightly paranoid musings weren't reason enough for her not to attend the annual Christmas gathering held on the station. It was important for the command team to put in an appearance and mingle with the crew. She was expecting her first officer, Corman Stark, to appear momentarily, once he had finished his meeting with the Phoenix's captain.

For the few minutes that she had been in the room, Rachel had been content to stand to one side of the room, exchanging nods with acquaintances or offering the brief, appropriate, well wishes. So far everything appeared to be peaceful.

Until Rama showed up.

Stifling the urge to sigh heavily, Rachel made her way over to the Ferengi, intending to find out just what it was that he was up to.

"Mr Rama, this is a Starfleet event. The station gathering will be held next week," she said in her usual, indifferent tone.

"Yes, I am aware this is for Starfleet types. But when I heard you would be serving the replicated slosh, I decided that this crew deserved a better array of food... So here I am! Don't worry. This one is on the house."

Leela walked lazily with the augment. They were already late, but Zero didn't seem to be in any hurry to get there. "It'll be okay Zero, if at any point you feel overwhelmed, come find me. We can gracefully excuse ourselves and take a little break."

[Corridors]

Pale eyebrows lifted in surprise as Zero listened to Leela's reassurance. She had expected the Trill to abandon her to her own devices as soon as they arrived at the gathering and think no more of her, or to tell her that she was insufficient in some way should she feel overwhelmed at the gathering. The offer of assistance should such a situation come to pass with the promise of an escape route was something of a surprise to her.

Her feelings of surprise were soon replaced by mild panic as they arrived at the gathering, stepping through the doors into the large hall that was hosting the event. Her hand dropped to the canine at her side, threading her fingers through the soft, thick fur of the back of Ghost's neck as she tried to stop her hands trembling so much.

"Ah Admiral Rachel." He said extending his hand in a traditional human greeting. He waited for a moment but put his hand back to his side when she failed to return his handshake. This one is on the house."

[Gathering]

Rachel had looked down at the extended hand, but not reached out to take it. Growing up on Vulcan meant that there were certain human behaviours that she had never really adopted, and shaking hands happened to be one of them.

He's serving food at a Starfleet function and not demanding payment? What is he up to? she mused quietly to herself. Unfortunately, a social occasion was not the time to start up a possible criminal investigation, but the instincts were sometimes too strong to completely deny.

"On the house? What do we owe this strange display of festive spirit?"

[Holiday Gathering]

You owe this to rule number seventy-six. He thought.

"Admiral Rachel... I heard you were having this get together for you staff and decided that you and your team deserved nothing but the finest food for this event." He reached up and touched her shoulder as he leaned in, as if he was sharing a big secret. "You know, I had to do extensive research on this particular occasion. There is nothing like all of this giving and selflessness on Ferenginar. You can only imagine how surprised I was when I discovered it was customary to give things away... FOR FREE! But in the spirit of this odd season... This is my gift to you."

He extended his hand outward towards the food table. A head was in their field of vision blocking the table. "Brelt, get you big head out of the way!" The waiter ducked down revealing an elaborate table of food. A bright red table cloth glistened with glitter. Atop the clothe the edges were trimmed in garland with green leaves and flowers adorning the corners. The food dishes were simple. Comprised mostly of human comfort food. "Have you ever heard of egg-nog? He said stammering at the word, unsure if he was saying it correctly. "A terrible concoction! But if you drink enough of it you kind of start to like it."

Perhaps wisely, Archangel decided not to answer that first question, suspecting that it might be rhetorical anyway.  She really had no intention of starting a fight with the Admiral. Those kinds of things never ended well.  However, the best laid plans of Starfleet officers and brass oft go awry.

Her dark eyes narrowed at the inference and new pressure that Stark seemed to be laying on her shoulders.  Whether he meant it to be or not, it sounded almost like a threat, comparing himself to Deacon's guard dog and then going on to remind her of how things were supposed to be.  Her teacup was set down on the desk with a little more force than was necessary as she got to her feet, squaring her shoulders and stiffening her spine.

"With all due respect, sir, I don't need you to remind me of my duty.  I have done and always will do what is in the best interest for the Federation."

[XO's Office]

"Of course you will," Stark shrugged, allowing a touch of sarcasm to enter his voice. It was quickly evaporated, though, with the serious look in his grey eyes as he considered her. "I've always believed that." He didn't even need to say that the second he stopped believing that...she'd find herself with a nice planetside job at Starfleet Command. Or maybe the Academy.

The door slid open, and Corman walked through it. "Stand down from Red Alert, Captain," he quietly said. "I suppose it's time for us to make our appearances."

Although it took quite a bit of effort, Archangel stowed her temper away, reminding herself that, sometime soon, she may need his help with something. She couldn't afford to burn her bridges with the man quite yet and she had shown enough attitude for one meeting. Any more would be more resemblent of a petulant teenager than a starship captain.

"Acknowledged, sir," she replied evenly, stepping out of his office after him and starting to head down to the gathering, looking forward to seeing her family and shaking off the meeting with the Admiral.

Arlan Opran wrote:

Well, this is a drag, was all that Opran could think of.  Very little of the food was on his 'approved list', and the last time he'd had real alcohol, he'd ended up doubled over with cramps and a doctor telling him he'd been an idiot.  So he stood with a cup of hot Fanalian tea, one of few things from the Trill homeworld he could stomach.  He wondered if he'd see Leela here.  Or if she'd ever talk to him again after the argument they'd had in the Mess Hall.

[Christmas Party]

Is it...snowing purple? Conor quirked his mouth in a slight frown, double-checking the fact that...yes, it was. Even odder was the fact that nobody else seemed to be really noticing it. Time for alcohol, he thought. Most assuredly. Conor nodded his thanks to one of the wait staff, a rather pleasant Tellarite. That, of course, almost seemed like an oxymoron, but he supposed such things were always possible. If anything, working in space quickly taught one that.

Spying a Trill, Conor was briefly disappointed that wasn't the Trill he was looking for. Apparently Leela hadn't made it to the gathering yet. Nevertheless, Opran was a fellow sec/tac officer, and one that Conor had barely spoke to before. "No, purple snow isn't endemic to Earth," he smiled, approaching the man.

It was testament to the amount of self control that Rachel had trained herself to achieve that she didn't pull away immediately from the Ferengi's hand on her shoulder. She tolerated it as she followed his gesturing toward the table and the change of food that had occurred. She wasn't all that sure just why he was trying to show her given that she couldn't see it the same way that he did, but she put it down to the unfortunate reality that no one really understood just what it was that she saw.

"A gift to me for Christmas," Rachel stated, one eyebrow rising above the edge of her VISOR. "I suppose that you'll expect a gift in return, to be inkeeping with tradition."

"Eggnog was never something that particularly appealed to me once I learned what went into it," she replied honestly to his question.

On cue, tiny little snowflakes began to fall all around the main floor area, emitted by holoprojectors.  Myree gave a contented sip of her drink, and...

Immediately noted that something was wrong.

"Yeah...I don't think it snows purple on Earth..." she muttered to herself.  That was damn sure what it was doing in here, though.  After a while, Myree decided that she rather liked the purple snow, proving that things could always be improved upon.

[Gathering]

Slipping into the Christmas gathering, Mira immediately started to scan the little groups of people that had formed in an attempt to find a familiar face. Unfortunately, those were few and far between given that she had little time to socialise outside of her duty and her line of work wasn't exactly a good one to make friends in.

Thankfully, she spotted one figure that she knew relatively well who also happened to be standing on her own. The hologram quickly wound her way through the people until she came to be standing next to the Orion science officer.

"I think there might be a slight malfunction in the holographic systems," she said in response to Myree's mutterings. "Thankfully, I have my own emitter. Greetings, Myree. I trust you are well?"

"Antarean brandy...sherry, vodka, tequila, Yridian ale..." Raynor said, emphasizing his disgust in particular on that last one. The drink spread wasn't too bad (aside from the Yridian swill), but he was certainly hoping for a few more...robust...options. "Hm. What's this?" Reaching out, Raynor found a slim, thick glass bottle of something yellowish. "Dresci. Not bad." The Klingon helped himself to a flute of it, turning back around as a large grin broke out on his features.

And how could he not? His Lana, his dear doctor, was fast approaching...with another Cardassian in tow. Raynor's memory was excellent, and he put a name to the man. Epath. Apparently, Epath had been in the Dominion War. The wrong side, obviously, but Raynor had no idea if they'd met across the void of space or not. It was, after all, a very big war. Still, he would make pleasant for Ilana's sake.

The smile that broke out over the Klingon's face was one that Ilana loved to see, but not quite as much as the soft ones that he reserved just for her. Just being close to him was a delight since they seemed to be constantly busy in recent times, too much so to be able to spend much time with each other beyond Raynor's making sure that she ate and slept a reasonable amount. With any luck, they would have more time once they Phoenix left dock. Until then, every moment was to be cherished.

"R-R-Raynor, th-th-this is N-N-Nelkar. H-He w-w-was th-the one wh-who h-h-helped m-m-me after th-th-the attack at th-th-the C-Cardassian c-c-colony," she said, hoping to somehow ease their introductions. "N-Nelkar, th-this is R-Raynor, m-m-my p-par'm-m-mach'k-k-kai."
